SHOULD MENTAL HEALTH BE GIVEN IMPORTANCE AS MUCH AS PHYSICAL HEALTH?
In 2019 10.4 % out of 1 lakh, people committed suicide. In 2020 11.3 % out of 1 lakh, people committed suicide. India recorded 153,052 suicide cases on an average of 418 days. Tamil Nadu recorded 22.8 % out of 1 lakh suicide cases. One million people commit suicide each year. More number of suicide cases occur between the age group of 15 -44.
Why do you think suicides take place? Why in such a large numbers? Why do suicides increase day by day?
IT companies exploit people's mental and physical health by overworking them. In many families, people who are depressed are not given enough time to heal. The major factor for suicide is mental illness. Mental health is not given importance as much as physical health.
Mental and physical health are equally important components of overall well-being. A human being needs a healthy mind and body to lead a happy and healthy life. Physical fitness helps our body to stay strong. When we are mentally healthy we enjoy our life and the environment around us. We can be creative, learn, try new things and take risks.
Mental and physical health are both interconnected. When you are physically not well it affects your mental health. Depression increases the risk of many types of physical health conditions like diabetes, heart diseases, and stroke. When we are mentally ill even if we are physically healthy we won't appreciate it. We won't be able to see the beauty of life. Mental health includes our emotions and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It determines how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices and decisions. Sometimes mental illness is terrifying because you feel like you have lost control of your mind and nothing makes sense. It's like watching yourself on autopilot mode and having little to no control.
When we feel we are not mentally stable, we shouldn't be afraid of coming out and seeking help. We shouldn't be afraid of people's judgment. Because people will keep on judging but in the end, we will be the ones who failed to explore the beauty of life. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and the stigma associated with it should be removed. Remember that your mental health is a priority, your inner peace is essential and your self-care is a necessity. People tell physical health is more important yet in a few companies people are not given enough leaves for physical health. We live in a society where essentials are ignored. It's high time we change this situation by spreading awareness on mental health.
I believe that one day our society, our world will change. The future depends on what you do today, so spread awareness and "Be the Change."
